As Salamu Alikum and hello everyone!
Today I will talk about the chores we do in my family. How about I start with telling you a little about my family. There are 6 children in my family, with me being the eldest child and only girl. I don’t want to use my brother’s names, to be a little private, like my own name, so I shall use numbers. Brother #1 is 16, and I am 17 months older than him. It’s kinda weird, he is January, I am September. Brother #2 is going to be 14 inshallah, Brother #3 is going to be 9 inshallah, Brother #4 is going to be 12 inshallah and Brother #5 is going to be 1 inshallah. And last but not least, I will be 18 inshallah!
I wasn’t sure about mentioning my brothers ages but I was thinking it would be good to since I am talking about chores, and I don’t think that age can always define what a person can do, but sometimes, it can. What I think is that it can have to do with a person’s mental and physical ability. It just depends on the person. I am not sure if that makes any sense and if I am not contradicting myself. If I am, please tell me.
Back to the chores. As the years have gone by once we were all able to help out with major chores, we’ve had some trial and error go by to figure out what schedule works out for all of us. The schedule we have right now could change if my parents find that they want to try something else, but I think they are O.K with the current schedule.
We have 7 chores in our household:
Everyone gets one chore for the week and it rotates, from -youngest to eldest-. For example, this week, Brother #4 has living and dining room because last week Brother #3 had it. It’s a little different for me, ‘cause I am the eldest. I get what chore my younger brother had. This week I have bathrooms, because Brother #4 had bathrooms last week. For trash, only Brothers #1 and 2 do it, because they are taller and stronger than the other two boys. For them they change every other week. The schedule can sometimes change, for whatever reason there might be. Like, if someone got sick and was in bed for a few days, then one sibling might be assigned to their chore, or we all have to help, if it’s the kitchen. And the person who helped can decide if they want the person they helped to help them with their chore. Being sick could be an idea for another blog post. Hmm…
I suppose cleaning our rooms is a chore, but since the boys now have their own room alhamdulillah (we recently moved) and I have my own room too, we just have to clean it up everyday. Dust, sweep, and regularly fold your clothes, because eventually they become all jumbled together, putting things where they belong, nothing is allowed on the floor unless it belongs on the floor. Things like that- normal things. I have to be honest, I am not so good with the dusting part. My desk usually has all sorts of things on it, from school things and yarn and needles, to screw drivers and cereal boxes (empty). Actually, right now, it has a cereal box and 2 screw drivers and my planners on it.
I think I am going to have to have a part 2 to this post because I realized that I am talking about this a lot. I will go more in depth about the chores we do and how we came to the schedule that we have. So, this is where I shall stop for today.
Is anyone else an only girl in a family of boys? Are the eldest of your family? How do you manage the chores in your family? Tell me all about it, I’d love to know!
