I started taking horseback riding a few weeks ago with some of my siblings and cousins and so far, I really like it, and I always look forward to the next lesson (inshallah!). We take one lesson a week in the early morning but I wish it was more than once a week (though I feel so tired after I’m done, we stay up after Fajr people!). The kids take their lessons together and I take mine by myself in an enclosed area just for women. I am the only beginner my instructor (a woman) has so it is a bit lonely, but I guess that’s better ‘cause she can concentrate on one person.
I rode a horse once, around Eid a few years ago, and I was fully covered. But I just rode the horse, and didn't take a lesson. I think I actually could try riding with my abaya on but my instructor doesn’t want me to, for the said reasons above. If I was able to I would need an open abaya and I don’t have one, since I don’t use a mounting block and I would want my legs to be covered all the way instead of being hitched up, since the pants I wear look tight on me when I get on the horse.
I haven’t bought anything for riding, yet, but I really want to inshallah, like the riding pants and chaps. I don’t wear leggings or skinny jeans so I would feel a little uncomfortable and self-conscious if I wore the pants. A helmet would be nice, even though the club has helmets, but there aren’t that many of the size I can fit, with me having a big head and big hair (plus sharing! Who knows what someone has on their head?!). I braid it (my hair) down every week though so that helps A LOT alhamdulillah.
I have gone to some sports stores in the hope that they would have some of the items I want/need but they all didn’t have anything. Inshallah I can find a store that just has Equestrian things soon, I’ve been wearing my jeans and they aren’t that stretchy, so my instructor said I should stop wearing them. Also my Converse, because they are so flat and I should wear sneakers because my feet keep sliding though the stirrups or coming out.
But then later on, when I went out to hang with some friends, I was feeling the tightness and jellyiness in my muscles!!!! OH MY GOSH!!! I felt like that for the next 2 days. It was the worse thing ever! Now I know that if I had made myself walk a lot more, and walk OUTSIDE my house, my legs wouldn’t have been hurting so much. Because after the next lesson I took, I was walking a lot for the next few days, and I didn’t feel anything in my legs ( but I sure felt it in my feet, my poor feet) and that was GREAT!
Anyways, I don’t know how many more lessons the kids and I are going to be taking, since it’s getting hot, and my grandma said we might have to stop. If only there was an indoor place we could learn!!!
Have you ever taken horseback riding lessons? Did you like it? Do you still ride? Have any suggestions of some places I could go buy the things I need? I’d really appreciate it if you do!
