As Salamu Alikum and hello everyone!
I went and got some yarn about a week ago (again, I know!) and decided that since I now have a sewing machine (mashallah) and I do want to make things with it, besides curtains, I would need fabric scissors since I didn't have any. So I made my stops into the notion shops and asked about the scissors and the price and whatnot, and then came to the conclusion that fabric scissors are rather costly.

Well, at least they were costly for me. Or maybe I was being cheap, I don’t know. But I did know that I didn’t want to pay 35 plus AED for one pair of scissors. I do understand though that those costly scissors could last for a long time if taken care of properly. If my grandma was with me she could have helped me figure what was best to get. But that’s all right, ‘cause I found all the scissors I wanted that came in a set from Tchibo, and for the cost of one of those other scissors too mashallah!
The set comes with “Dressmaking scissors for precise edging, approx. 22 cm, Pinking scissors prevent fraying…length approx. 22.5 cm, Embroidery scissors for cutting threads and for fine stitching, length approx. 10 cm” and all for 35 AED! I pounced on them when I saw them in the store, I was so happy.
Now, the book of the week is “The Little White Horse” by Elizabeth Goudge and I absolutely love this book. As you can see from the picture it is a little worn out. I did get it from a second-hand store though, and it was looking like that already but it got a more worn out from me reading it. But I do take care of my books. It’s just that you can tell sometimes when a person reads a book a lot :P.
The description on the back:
‘ For a fleeting instant Maria thought she saw a little white horse with a flowing mane and tail, head raised, poised, halted in mid-flight, as though it had seen her and was glad.’
The beautiful valley of Moonacre is shadowed by the memory of the Moon Princess and the mysterious little white horse. To her surprise Maria Merryweather, a stranger to Moonacre Manor, finds herself involved with what happened to the Moon Princess so many years before. She is determined to restore peace and happiness to the whole of Moonacre Valley. And Maria usually gets her way…
It has been televised by BBC as ‘Moonacre’ but I haven’t seen it and I can’t find it anywhere on the Internet. It has been made into a movie as well, called ‘The Secret of Moonacre’ and, it was aaalllright. There were some key elements that were just so wrong, but that’s how movies are sometimes. For example, and this is one that I really don’t like, is when they change the characters ages. As far as I can remember, it was never exactly said how old Robin is in the book, but I think that he is about the same age as Maria, who is 13 years old. In the movie, he is like, 16 or something. AND he… well, I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t read the book or watched the movie. But I will give you the gist of it and try not to spoil anything.
The story is about a girl, Maria Merryweather, who is orphaned and goes to live with her cousin and now guardian, Benjamin Merryweather at Moonacre Manor, with her governess Miss Helioptrope. Oh, and her dog, Wiggins. She finds that things there are mysterious; for example, Maria and Miss Heliotrope are the first females to enter the manor in 20 years, and they don’t see any servants and yet the manor is spotless and the food is at the table when they go to supper. She finds out about the story of the Moon Princess, her ancestor, and learns that she has to save Moonacre by righting the wrongs and finally brings peace to the valley. She is helped by wonderful people that she meets there as well as beasts that she befriends.
How was that description? Do you think I spoiled anything? I hope not.
