As salamu alikum and ohayo!!
This week I was a little adventurous with my sewing machine and searched on YouTube for something easy I could make with what I had. I found this tutorial for a Easy Zipper Pouch from Melly Sews and since I had this random zipper in my craft shelf, I started watching it to see if I liked it enough to try it out. It became an adventure of learning experiences mashallah.

I found this tutorial for a Easy Zipper Pouch from Melly Sews and since I had this random zipper in my craft shelf, I started watching it to see if I liked it enough to try it out. It became an adventure of learning experiences mashallah.
As you can see from the picture, I liked it enough to make it. I used some fabric that I got a while back from Ghuwair as my outer fabric, which I got to make a pillow but...it hasn't happened yet and was just sitting there. I cut up one of my dresses that I was going to give away and used it as my lining.
Everything was going fine, I just didn't measure the fabrics EXACTLY the same, but it was alright. I followed the tutorial on how to shorten the zipper, and it was a tad bit too long :/ since I didn't measure it correctly. So I cut it shorter, and then it was a tad bit too short now *mentally smack myself*. Oh well. Started sewing the zipper to the lining as instructed and I placed the lining the way it was shown in the video. So how did my lining turn out to be sewn with the wrong side of the fabric being in the wrong place? Now when I look inside, I can tell that the wrong side is showing. But mashallah, when I showed my pouch to one of my mom's friends, she said the lining looked fine, and no one would notice that it wasn't sewn correctly. She said it looked like the kind of fabric that was made to look faded. That made me feel a lot better about my mistake!
Fast forward a few minutes (about 10 minutes or so) and I am starting to close the fabric so it can start looking like a pouch. Everything is going smoothy mashallah, until I get to where the end of the zipper is. At first, I tried to use the foot controller to sew over the zipper but then remembered really quickly that it was suggested in the tutorial to use the hand-wheel, so as to not break the needle or something. So far so good, alhamdulillah. My sewing machine did make a funny noise and I got scared for a second, tried sewing with the foot controller, and it was going fine, whew! So I kept going.
Then I came to the other side of the zipper. I don't know what went wrong there, I really don't. I hand-cranked over the zipper and as I was doing that, I think my needle must have hit the zipper teeth because it REALLY started to make that funny noise again. And when I tried sewing with the foot controller, it made a horrible screeching sort of noise and I was like, nope, I am not going to continue sewing with the foot and I just hand-cranked the rest of the way. Sunhanallah. By the time I got to the end of where I was sewing, my right hand was hurting so much, I was like okay, I going to try it out one more time before I tell my Grandma. It started to sew, but suuuuppppeeeerrr slow. I was almost finished by then, I just had to cut the thread and then turn the fabric and then sew the hole closed. I sewed the hole closed with the sewing machine and I started out using the foot controller, and then it made that noise again and I just hand cranked it the rest of the way.

Now, you must be thinking, 'why keep using your sewing machine after it started to not work properly?'. Well, to be honest, I just wanted to be finished with the pouch. I didn't want to hand sew it because my hand sewing skills weren't that great. I wanted this project to be something I made with a sewing machine, not my hands. But I most certainly didn't want my machine to get worse, not at all!
But you know what was the strangest thing? When my Grandma came over to take a look a few days later, it was sewing fine alhamduillah. I thought that it was just some weird temporary problem that happened and it was fine. I got really happy and started to prepare for another project. I started sewing and it was going really slow. Hmm, okay. Then it made that scratchy noise and I was like okay, that's it. I am putting this machine away and taking it to get repaired, which hasn't happened yet, because I am slightly procrastinating because I don't want to go outside and also I had been going out to iftars, and I just never asked to make a pit stop.

I finally got a nice box to store my sewing supplies, I am so happy! It's a great size for my small amount of supplies and plus it is blue. The top compartment is really great, it takes a little bit of wiggling to get it out but that is alright. I am mostly disappointed that the fabric chalk I JUST GOT broke in my haste to get the house phone, as it was on the fabric I was marking and it fell off and broke!
